TIME – Trauma Training

TIME (Trauma Informed Model of Empowerment) is an evidence and practice-based model that practitioners and organisations to support survivors of domestic abuse. Alongside drawing upon a wealth of research addressing trauma, trauma informed practice and domestic abuse, it draws on My Sisters Place’s experience of delivering effective trauma informed therapy to female survivors of domestic abuse for over 16 years and embedding trauma informed principles within all areas of its work.

TIME has been developed to be generic and applicable to survivors of trauma and aims to provide practitioners and organisations with knowledge, tools and interventions to support trauma survivors.  The TIME Module Training Programme recognises the need for all parts of an organisation to have an understanding and awareness of trauma and how it can impact on survivors, practitioners and organisations.  TIME aims to ensure that:

• practice is delivered in a trauma informed manner to avoid risk of re-traumatisation and support recovery from trauma;

• the needs of the survivor, practitioner and organisation are considered; and

• that when identifying and supporting the needs of trauma survivors provision is accessible, responsive, adaptable and effective at all levels of contact with a survivor.

Developed by Ejaye Moran, Counselling and Therapeutic Services Manager, My Sisters Place (MSP), Middlesbrough, to support survivors of domestic abuse

Supports practitioners and organisations develop a creative lens to integrate and assimilate trauma informed practice into their roles and adapt practice to meet changing landscapes and recognizes the importance of building supportive environments to promoting self-efficacy in all areas of a survivor’s life.

Trauma-informed practice to support survivors of domestic abuse necessitates an organisation-wide approach that includes, for example, managers, practitioners and volunteers. TIME training modules are aimed at organisations and services who acknowledge the benefits of trauma-informed practice but may possess limited knowledge of trauma and trauma-informed care and recognise the benefit of training in this area.

Organisations working to address domestic abuse often offer a wide range of services where staff interaction with survivors is specific to their individual roles. TIME recognises that training should be adaptable to each individual and provide effective, accessible knowledge, skills and tools which can be applied to the individual role and intensity of the work with survivors. TIME supports the development of individual knowledge, skills and confidence whilst supporting the transition into trauma informed practice as an individual practitioner, organisation or service.

TIME training takes a building block approach and provides a platform for staff to begin to build their knowledge and understanding of trauma and trauma informed practice by providing a range of training modules that support staff in the initial steps into trauma-informed practice.

TIME training recognises the demands and pressures faced by organisations and the importance of continuing to deliver essential services while staff receive training therefore the deliver of TIME training has been designed to provide flexibility around these constraints and provides organisations with a choice of specialist modules for practitioners aimed at being accessible in terms of cost and flexible delivery schedules.
